V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Headphone, Overview

There are genuinely few headphones that qualify as crossovers; headphones that audiophiles will love that still have a penchant for deep bass. The V-Moda Crossfade M-100 headphone is one of those few.

V-Moda’s CEO Val Kolton is a DJ by profession and a self-confessed fashionista at heart. I mention that because it’s clear from the start that his influence runs deep in designing every V-Moda product, including the Crossfade M-100.

Because of that, a more accurate description of the M-100’s would probably be high fashion meets hi-fi meets bass, all in a pair of cans built like tanks.

If your first thought on setting eyes on the M-100’s isn’t ostentatious, you probably make a habit of going to New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week… Or at least one of the Fashion Weeks.

The point is you’re fashionable, one of the higher beings that we all enviously worship.

For those of us lesser beings, if your second thought isn’t I’m intrigued or some other form of interest you probably shouldn’t be buying your own clothes, furniture or jewelry. In fact, you really shouldn’t be doing anything for yourself because you wouldn’t know beauty if it hit you in the face.

The hexagon shape of the all silver/gray M-100’s is clearly designed to elicit curiosity if not outright admiration from the get go.

Straight away, you’ll notice how the headband and the earcups seem weirdly disjointed, that’s not a coincidence. A Cliqfold mechanism is built into the hinges for the sole purpose of transforming these cans from fairly large to compact babies that you can fit into a small carry case or hold in your hand for easy traveling.

Touching the M-100’s will reveal something else, metal. From headband to earcups, the M-100’s are made of metal making them ultra-durable. Actually, the M-100’s are designed to survive impacts of 70-plus from a height of six feet onto a concrete floor.

To put you further at ease in the durability stakes, V-Moda provides you with two Kevlar-reinforced cables, a 36-inch one with compatible remote plus mic and a 78-inch one.

You can attach the cable to any one of the earcups as both have a fitting port; just make sure to close the other one with the provided V-Cork plugs.

The steel headband mentioned above can be flattened 10 times and still return to its original curve. The steel plates at the back of the earcups can be replaced or customized with laser engraving of your own design or V-Moda’s.

With all the steel it’s easy to think the M-100’s are heavy and uncomfortable, however, at 280g they’re actually on the light side of things.

As for comfort, the leatherette on the headband and earcups cover some very comfortable foam. The only slight problem is that the steel headband is a bit tight at first but gets better with regular usage.

V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Headphone and Case

A high fidelity sound profile is incredibly hard to mix with deep, strong bass but that’s exactly what the M-100’s give you.

The dynamism of the higher frequencies mixed with resonant bass and incredibly clear audio, with absolutely no distortion whatsoever at high volumes is the obvious reason why this is a favorite of the many celebrity DJ’s of our time.

The punchy deep bass brings out the best in Rock music, Hip Hop and generally any genre that’s bass friendly.

Thankfully, the mids and highs don’t suffer as a result of that emphasis with all frequencies coming at just about the same volume and with the same intensity.

Although the stereo image is broad that’s probably the only improvement I’d say V-Moda could make on these babies. That’s if I decided to nitpick that is.

Because of the tight headband, you’ll get a pretty good seal here, one which will comfortably shut out the majority of chatter around you.

The mic is pretty clear for calls so you shouldn’t have any trouble in that department either.

It’s easy to see why these are endorsed by so many celebrity DJ’s, hi-fi quality audio with strong bass is hard to come by.

Add extreme durability to the mix and you have a winner on your hands.

It’s also easy to see why they’re so expensive, frankly with all the little perks they come with it’s hard to see why they’re not more expensive than they currently are.

The only criticism I could possibly have is maybe the stereo imaging could be improved even more and leather instead of leatherette would have been nice, but even that is the nittiest nitpicking I can possibly do.

That said another awesome incentive if you think the price might be too much, V-Moda offers a 2-year guarantee and after that expires they will sell you a new pair at half the price if your old ones break. That’s how much they trust their product.

So better start reaching into those savings because it really doesn’t get any better than this.

  1. My friend has the same headphones and he recommended me this, but I first wanted to read some reviews. He told me the same arguments as yours. I think I will but this headphones, but it is very expensive. Do you have any coupons? They would help me when I will buy this

    1. Sorry Rick, I don’t know of any coupons, but you can keep an eye on the price. I’m sure there will be days that you can find a great deal on these. All the best!

  2. I am falling in love with these headphones. I have been thinking about investing in a nicer set of headphones. I am so tired of the earbuds, even the ones that go behind the ears that are blue tooth which I paid $50.00 plus dollars for, keep slipping out of my ears during my workouts. I will consider giving these a try. Awesome review.

  3. These are awesome. I love the clarity and detail. The bass to me is perfect compared to the bass you get from Beasts headphones. The design is sturdy and they fit great. I use them at the gym and also when I walk to work. I would definitely recommend these to everybody! If you like to hear your music these are the headphones for you.

  4. These are some fresh headphones and I’ve been needing to find some headphones to have when I’m out and about. Do you feel V-Moda Crossfade can go against some of the heavy hitter headphones like Beats by Dre or Bose. I feel these headphones improve each year and I know the V-Moda are improving as well. I think I will definitely add this to my bucket list because I feel headphone quality is very important and this model just may be it. Good Job Jurgen!

  5. Loving the review. I know you loose sound quality with in the ear headphones compared to the over the ear. I can not handle those huge things on my head, and well it is kinda difficult to listen to just one side earphone, ex for when I’m at work. I have to be able to have one ear available for my crew. I have a hard time with wires, even just the ones that connect behind your neck. I really want to look into the single pod ear buds with no wire. I guess what I’m asking is if you have any requests on a good pair, or maybe that could be your next review. 🙂
    Till next time…

    1. Hey Stephanie, I feel your pain 😉 Actually at this moment I’m doing the same thing, using my wired (cellphone) earphones in only one ear, because I have to hear when the phone rings 🙂

I might look into the complete wireless earbuds soon. Cheers!
