Skullcandy HESH 3 Wireless Overview
Skullcandy… Most of us are probably thinking about loud, screamy, flashy and obnoxious looking headphones that no adult would ever want to be seen with, right?
Now what most people don’t know, is that they also have a more conventional line of headphones, as can be seen in their Hesh and Crusher range of headphones.
Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Hesh 3, a rather stylish looking wireless headphone with no crazy design frills. Would you be willing to wear these in public? Let’s find out in our review!
Hesh 3 Design and Build Quality
The first thing I noticed is the complete absence of crazy details what’s otherwise so typical with Skullcandy headphones. The Hesh 3 has a very minimalistic and clean design without any distractions.
The Skullcandy logo is present on the side of the headband. It’s small, non-intrusive and made to blend in, rather than stand out, which is a good thing in my opinion.
The black version has a Black Tux vibe going on and looks very sophisticated. Other colors are available such as Blue, Grey, Red and Teal.
Volume controls are placed on the right earcup, while the middle button functions as a play/pause/calls button.
Straight underneath we have a micro-USB port for charging and next to that is a 3.5mm jack where you can plug in the headphone cable, in case you run out of battery juice.
An inline mic is also found in the right earcup, which is great for… you guessed it, taking calls.
Speaking about the earcups, I have to mention that both cups can swivel 90 degrees, which is convenient when wearing these around your neck, making the cups rest flat on your chest.
The Hesh 3 is also completely foldable for easy storage and transportation.
It’s outer frame is completely made out of a combination of matte and glossy plastic and unfortunately it all feels a bit cheap and fragile. The plastic doesn’t seem to be of the same quality as the one used by some of its competitors.
So while the design of the Hesh 3 is very good, the build quality looks a bit questionable…
Hesh 3 Comfort
When picking these up you immediately feel how lightweight these are.
The Hesh 3 are over-ear headphones which means the earcups are big enough to go completely over your ears. Thanks to the thick and soft padding comfort is pretty good and they isolate your ears quite well.
The sufficient padding on the headband makes sure there’s no excessive pressure on the skull
All in all, the Hesh 3 headphones are very comfortable and should give you no troubles in wearing them for continuous hours.
Comfort vs Hesh 2
The Hesh 3 improves over the Hesh 2 with more comfortable earpads and bigger openings which makes it a true over-ear headphone.
Hesh 3 Sound Quality
Sound quality is an important part of any good headphone and I’m glad to report that the Hesh 3 does not disappoint in that department.
Bass quality is pretty good, with the sub and mid bass sounding tight and controlled, which makes is shine with a lot of music genres. If you like to listen to EDM, Hip Hop and the more bass oriented music genres, the Hesh 3 will be great.
The mids on the other hand are not as emphasized and clearly have taken a backseat to the bass. There’s also a bit of bass bleed, which is probably a side effect of the closed design of the earcups.
Looking at the highs, these sound very crisp without going too far. They’re bright, but not overly bright
All in all, the Hesh 3 tends to lean towards a warmer and smooth sounding headphone, but still with enough energy to get you going.
Sound Quality vs Hesh 2
The Hesh 2 has even a bit more bass, but pays the price on overall clarity. The Hesh 3 also sounds a bit more refined.
Hesh 3 Wireless and features
The Hesh 3 is a pretty simplistic Bluetooth headphone and does not offer some of the features like other more expensive headphones do. Features like aptX HD and NFC are not available here.
That being said, the Bluetooth pairing is simply great. I had no issue whatsoever to pair them with my smartphone and laptop.
And with a battery life of 22 hours, you’ll be able to get through a few days if not a whole week, depending on how often you’ll use them.
One neat feature is the fast charging technology. This rapid charging means that by plugging these babies in for 10 minutes, you’ll get 4 hours of playback. Not bad and very convenient of you’re in a hurry to get going.
Taking calls is also no problem with the Hesh 3. You can use the control button on the right earcup to take any incoming calls. Voice quality is crisp and clear.
The Hesh 3 is also a great headphone for commuters thanks to the good passive noise isolation. This is achieved by the closed design and the pleather earpads, which do an excellent job in keeping surrounding noises out.
Hesh 3 Final Verdict
With the Hesh 3, Skullcandy provides a solid wireless headphone that throws out the company’s normal styling and applies a more grown-up design.
Audiophiles should look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for a fun sounding and mature looking Bluetooth headphone that’s ready to go wherever you go, the Hesh 3 is a decent offering.
Just be sure to take proper care as build quality is a bit flimsy. We would have loved to see that Skullcandy provided a storage case. Luckily, there’s a cheap one available that does the job.
The Skullcandy Hesh 3 Wireless improves upon the Hesh 2 in many ways and will provide a great companion if you threat it gentle!
