Skullcandy… Most of us are probably thinking about loud, screamy, flashy and obnoxious looking headphones that no adult would ever want to be seen with, right?

Now what most people don’t know, is that they also have a more conventional line of headphones, as can be seen in their Hesh and Crusher range of headphones.

Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Hesh 3, a rather stylish looking wireless headphone with no crazy design frills. Would you be willing to wear these in public? Let’s find out in our review!

Pros

  • Very comfortable
  • Stylish design
  • Good sound quality
  • Works also wired
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Questionable build quality

Hesh 3 Design and Build Quality

The first thing I noticed is the complete absence of crazy details what’s otherwise so typical with Skullcandy headphones. The Hesh 3 has a very minimalistic and clean design without any distractions.

The Skullcandy logo is present on the side of the headband. It’s small, non-intrusive and made to blend in, rather than stand out, which is a good thing in my opinion.

The black version has a Black Tux vibe going on and looks very sophisticated. Other colors are available such as Blue, Grey, Red and Teal.

Volume controls are placed on the right earcup, while the middle button functions as a play/pause/calls button.

Straight underneath we have a micro-USB port for charging and next to that is a 3.5mm jack where you can plug in the headphone cable, in case you run out of battery juice.

An inline mic is also found in the right earcup, which is great for… you guessed it, taking calls.

Speaking about the earcups, I have to mention that both cups can swivel 90 degrees, which is convenient when wearing these around your neck, making the cups rest flat on your chest.

The Hesh 3 is also completely foldable for easy storage and transportation.

It’s outer frame is completely made out of a combination of matte and glossy plastic and unfortunately it all feels a bit cheap and fragile. The plastic doesn’t seem to be of the same quality as the one used by some of its competitors.

So while the design of the Hesh 3 is very good, the build quality looks a bit questionable…

Hesh 3 Comfort

When picking these up you immediately feel how lightweight these are.

The Hesh 3 are over-ear headphones which means the earcups are big enough to go completely over your ears. Thanks to the thick and soft padding comfort is pretty good and they isolate your ears quite well.

The sufficient padding on the headband makes sure there’s no excessive pressure on the skull

All in all, the Hesh 3 headphones are very comfortable and should give you no troubles in wearing them for continuous hours.

Comfort vs Hesh 2

The Hesh 3 improves over the Hesh 2 with more comfortable earpads and bigger openings which makes it a true over-ear headphone.

Hesh 3 Sound Quality

Sound quality is an important part of any good headphone and I’m glad to report that the Hesh 3 does not disappoint in that department.

Bass quality is pretty good, with the sub and mid bass sounding tight and controlled, which makes is shine with a lot of music genres. If you like to listen to EDM, Hip Hop and the more bass oriented music genres, the Hesh 3 will be great.

The mids on the other hand are not as emphasized and clearly have taken a backseat to the bass. There’s also a bit of bass bleed, which is probably a side effect of the closed design of the earcups.

Looking at the highs, these sound very crisp without going too far. They’re bright, but not overly bright

All in all, the Hesh 3 tends to lean towards a warmer and smooth sounding headphone, but still with enough energy to get you going.

Sound Quality vs Hesh 2

The Hesh 2 has even a bit more bass, but pays the price on overall clarity. The Hesh 3 also sounds a bit more refined.

Hesh 3 Wireless and features

The Hesh 3 is a pretty simplistic Bluetooth headphone and does not offer some of the features like other more expensive headphones do. Features like aptX HD and NFC are not available here.

That being said, the Bluetooth pairing is simply great. I had no issue whatsoever to pair them with my smartphone and laptop.

And with a battery life of 22 hours, you’ll be able to get through a few days if not a whole week, depending on how often you’ll use them.

One neat feature is the fast charging technology. This rapid charging means that by plugging these babies in for 10 minutes, you’ll get 4 hours of playback. Not bad and very convenient of you’re in a hurry to get going.

Taking calls is also no problem with the Hesh 3. You can use the control button on the right earcup to take any incoming calls. Voice quality is crisp and clear.

The Hesh 3 is also a great headphone for commuters thanks to the good passive noise isolation. This is achieved by the closed design and the pleather earpads, which do an excellent job in keeping surrounding noises out.

Hesh 3 Final Verdict

With the Hesh 3, Skullcandy provides a solid wireless headphone that throws out the company’s normal styling and applies a more grown-up design.

Audiophiles should look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for a fun sounding and mature looking Bluetooth headphone that’s ready to go wherever you go, the Hesh 3 is a decent offering.

Just be sure to take proper care as build quality is a bit flimsy. We would have loved to see that Skullcandy provided a storage case. Luckily, there’s a cheap one available that does the job.

Summary

The Skullcandy Hesh 3 Wireless improves upon the Hesh 2 in many ways and will provide a great companion if you threat it gentle!

  1. Thank you for bringing this to my knowledge. I usually just go for any ear piece and I always end up complaining. This review is a guide towards getting something better. You pointed me in the right direction and I appreciate it. Thanks for sharing this. I’m more informed. This is also an amazing gift idea.

  2. Hello Jurgen,

Excellent review about this brand of headphones.

I am particularly pleased with certain aspects.

Good sound quality, simple and that is wireless.

I also consider it very convenient to have a very good speed and load capacity.

I like to perform in the field regularly my jogging outings.

What do you think the behavior of this headset especially considering the sweat?

    I await your opinion.

    Thank you! Claudio

    1. Hey Claudio. The Hesh 3 is rather sweat resistant, so you should have no issues. Just make sure to clean them afterwards with a dry cloth.

  3. These Hesh 3 Wireless headphones look pretty good! I keep thinking I need to switch to wireless headphones because one of my cats keeps eating the wires on mine. I have to replace them every time she gets to them. UGH. lol

I like the fast charging technology that these ones have. I often forget to charge my things over night, so that’s something that would be really great to have. Nothing worse than getting ready to go out for a walk and your headphones are dead. (That happens to me when my cat eats mine… lol)

One problem I have with all the headphones I buy lately (including the ones for my kids) is that they break so easily. Within a couple of months, they’re dead. I hope these last longer!

    1. The good thing is that you can use the Hesh 3 both wired and wireless. So if your cat chews up the chord, you’re still in the game. 😉

We have our doubts about durability and looking at the reviews on Amazon, we’re not the only one. However, it didn’t break on us during testing, but you should be careful with them.

  4. Hi Jurgen.  Thanks for doing this headphone review.   I have been looking into purchasing a set of headphones that have a more conventional design that I could wear while exercising outdoors.   The area where I live tends to get windy.  The small headphones and earplugs either fall off or fall out or the sound of the wind distracts me.  I am thinking the design that completely covers my ears would block out the wind noise.   Do you know if these would fit secure enough that they would stay on my head while jogging, jumping rope or while I am doing other exercises that include bouncy types of movements?    Thanks in advance.

    1. You should have no issues in using these while doing any kind of bouncy exercises, Sondra. They even withstand a good amount of sweat. Just make sure you dry the earpads off after a sweaty workout.

  5. Thanks for the great review.  I’m in the market to replace my Logitech G930’s I think they are because they keep disconnecting from the wireless and causing my conference calls to suddenly go silent until they reconnect.

I really like that the Hesh 3 has the wired option.  That’s something my current set is missing and the battery life is impressive.

I have a few questions for you:

    1) How is the sound quality as far as picking up your speech?  Is it clear for those on the other end?  Is it noise cancelling on the mic or just the headphones?

    2) What is the range?  Being Bluetooth I assume it’s in the 30 feet area.  My G930’s are 2.4 GHz and thus have a longer range but I think that 2.4 frequency is part of my dropping issue with all the 2.4 stuff flying around in my neighborhood.

    3) Is this the headset you’d recommend for someone who occasionally uses it for games but mostly uses it for conference calls and voicing screen video recordings or is there another pair you’d recommend?

The price is nice, I just want to make sure it’s the right setup for my needs.

    Thanks again,

         Scott

    1. Hey Scott. To answer your questions:

      1. Speech quality is very good. We had no issues while making phone calls. I believe they have a noise cancelling mic, as we tested them in loud environments and we didn’t had to shout at each other.

      2. Bluetooth range is between 10 to 30 meters, depending if there are obstacles like walls.

      3. Although they’re not made specifically for gaming, I see no reason why they shouldn’t be usable. I think they’re pretty good for conference calls, especially if you’re sitting in a room with other people. They have good noise isolation and the mic performance is great.

  6. Hey there,

I’ve really enjoyed reading this review on “Skullcandy HESH 3” as you’ve provided us with lots of information regarding these wireless headphones. I’ve bought them a couple of weeks back for Thanksgiving as there was a good discount and I completely agree with the fact that it’s absolutely comfortable. It feels as though you’re attaching cotton to your ears.

I bought this because its comfortable and has got a long last battery life. In my opinion, I tend to think that this is one of the best headphones I’ve ever bough. The pros definitely out weight the cons.

Thank you for sharing about this review with us. Keep up the good work Jurgen!

  7. Hello, thanks for this in-depth review of HESH 3 my Beat by Dre headphone just got spoilt and I’m on the lookout to purchase another awesome headset. This thorough review has really helped my decision and I’m going to purchase one as soon as possible. Keep doing the great job.

  8. Great idea for a gift this holiday season. My teenage daughter has been asking for one. This might just be a good alternative or compromise against the beats she wanted. Thanks for sharing. This is very helpful for a mum like me who knows nothing about this kind of stuff lol
