Sennheiser CX 685 Adidas Sports In-Ear Headphones, Overview

The Sennheiser CX 685 has been around for quite a few years now. Made in collaboration with Adidas, these in-ear headphones are specifically made to be used with sports and exercise activities in mind. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Design and Functionality

For an earphone designed to be used with all kinds of sports activities, it is essential that they do not fall out when moving your head. The Sennheiser CX 685 has specially designed the EarFin holding system, which are essentially small fins on top of the earphones that fit on the inside of your ear. To make sure that they fit different ear sizes, the fins are made from a soft and adjustable material. I gotta say that this works quite well and I found it preferable to earphones with a holding system that goes around your ear. For one thing, I was able to wear my sunglasses with no discomfort whatsoever while using them for my morning run. Also, when you’ve properly put them in your ears, there’s no way that they’re going to fall out. You really need to pull on the cable hard, so they’re not going to accidentally fall out.

To take advantage of the closed acoustic design, it is imperative to have a good seal. Luckily Sennheiser provides three different sizes of silicone earbuds. When you have a perfect fit there is little sound leakage, which is important when you’re at the gym. And while they did not completely shut out the background noise, I was still able to fully concentrate on my own music without the need to turn up the volume too loud. For me, this is the way I like it because I still want to be somewhat aware of my surroundings.

Sennheiser CX 685 Adidas Sports In-Ear HeadphonesThe CX 685 is also sweat and water resistant which is also an essential feature on a sports earphone. And especially for me, because I sweat easily. I’ve done several tests to see if they stayed comfortable and in position over longer periods of time. I’m happy to say that never I had to reposition or press the earphones back into place, despite some intense HIIT training (think Beachbody’s Insanity).

The reinforced cable on the CX 685 provided extra durability and features a clip that you can use to shorten the cable a bit. The cable itself is 1.2m in length and has a 3.5mm angled jack. I did have the feeling that most of the time the cable was a little bit loo long. Especially when you’re using it with an armband that holds your music device. However, thanks to the cable clip it was not much of an issue. Another thing about the cable is that it’s made from a very soft rubberised material. I like it quite a lot since it does not feel awkward when you wear the cable under your t-shirt. In fact, it feels very nice and never distracts you.

The cable does not feature a mic or music controls. But to be honest, you shouldn’t be making phone calls during your workout, right? And a music control dock on the cable would only get in the way as the cable would become heavier and clumsier to wear.

Sound Quality

How does the Sennheiser CX 685 sound? Overall these sound really nice for a sports earphone of this price. They’re equipped with 10mm drivers, which is large enough for these kinds of earphones. Mids and highs all sound really great and well balanced and the bass sounds fine too. However, if you’re more of a bass fanatic then you may find the bass a bit low on the CX 685. But overall they provide a pretty well-balanced sound signature and really enjoyable to listen to while working out.

A Word on Cleaning

I do want to mention something about the cleaning kit. Most of the times when earphones suddenly fail, it is because people accidentally touch the cones while cleaning them and make small scratches on them. Over time, this will destroy your earphones. You won’t run this risque on the CX 685. When you want to clean them, you pull off the earbuds and gently clean the earphone with the provided kit. You cannot accidentally touch the cones on the CX 685. This is actually a great design!

What’s in the Box?

In the box, you’ll find 3 pairs of different silicone earbuds. A nice velcro pouch with the Sennheiser and Adidas logo on. The cable clip. And a cleaning kit.  If you want to save the package, I suggest you open the box from the bottom. There’s no way to open the box from the top without breaking the package. Just a small hint if you like to keep the box in mint condition.

Sennheiser CX 685 Adidas Sports In-Ear HeadphonesWarranty

Sennheiser offers a full 2-year warranty on the CX 685, which is awesome as this really boosts confidence that these headphones will not let you down easily!

There’s a good reason why these currently get 4.1 out of 5 stars from +827 reviews on Amazon! The Sennheiser CX 685 Adidas Sports In-Ear Headphones are one of the best in-ear headphones you can get if you’re looking for earphones that will stay in no matter what. Even if you’re wearing glasses!

They are not the fanciest looking headphones. They’re not meant for plain commuting. These are hardcore sports earphones! So if that’s your thing and you want to fully concentrate on your workouts, the CX 685 is an excellent companion.

  1. These In-Ear Headphones remind me of earbuds like the ones i get whenever I buy a Samsung Galaxy S5 Smartphone. Naturally yours would probably need to stay inyour ears better since theyare for sports. i like mine because they sound good and I don’t do much in the way of sports.
    Thank you,
    Edward Mijarez

    1. Yes, there’s a big difference between these and your free earbuds. Even in sound quality. Also, if you use your free earbuds for active sports, they will constantly fall out and after a while they will stop working, because of sweat that enters the earbuds. But if you don’t really do sports, it doesn’t matter of course.

    Hi Jurgen,

I wish these earphones were around when I was more youthful and more athletic. The way that they can get wet and proceed with capacity has my my interests . Also, the extraordinary moderate cost for them is awesome for the quality.

    Much thanks to You!

    Yours Truly,
