There’s one fact everyone can agree on when it comes to music, it’s incredibly subjective. The genres in music are so vast and varied it’s a tough job to list them exhaustively.

Obviously this is important because it means there’s something for everyone no matter how weird your taste. That said, the medium through which you listen to your music is just as important if not more, it’ll make or break your listening sessions.

To get the best all-round experience you usually have to fork out the big bucks, nowhere is that trend more apparent than with headphones. However, once in a while, headphone manufacturers put in some effort to buck the trend, giving the world a low budget headphone that provides significantly more bang for buck.

The MPOW 059 is obviously one of those headphones created with that intention.

Design and Durability

The first thing you’ll notice about the MPOW 059’s is the stylish design, every set (except the black version) comes with a glossy two-tone coloring that stands out in the crowd.

You can choose anything from the classy black-silver to the brazen black-red, with all black as an option for those who prefer minimalistic styles. The MPOW name is written in black on a silver logo on the side of each earcup.

Of course, this is a Bluetooth headphone (although it comes with a 3.5mm cable for use as a wired version) and as such the controls are located on the headphones, specifically the right earcup.

Unlike most headphones in this category, the 059 has separate controls for volume and music playback (next and previous track) the power button, however triples as the power on/off and call answering switch.

The USB charging port is also located on the right earcup.

The left earcup houses the microphone as well as the 3.5mm audio in port for when you want to go wired. All controls are sturdy and responsive when pressed, which is refreshing as it gives instant feedback.

Although it’s almost completely made of plastic, the headphone is far from flimsy. The hinges, which are usually a problem area on cheap headphones rare steel reinforced on the 059’s, increasing the durability factor even more.

As an over-ear headphone, the 059 mostly sits on your skull instead of your ears, giving it one-up over on-ear sets in the comfort stakes.

The over-ear design also means the 059’s are noise isolating means they’re passively noise isolating, which is good news on the sound quality side of things.

The over-ear design isn’t the only thing comfortable about the 059’s though, the memory protein earpads adjust to the shape of the wearer’s ears and skull. This key design feature is, in my opinion, what really sells the comfort factor for me.

Usually, whether a headphone sits on your ear fully or partially, there is some discomfort arising from the pressure exerted by the earcups, in this case the earcups conform to the wearer’s head, alleviating potential ear pressure.

The trade-off the memory protein earpads come with is they sometimes tend to get a little stuffy, causing some sweating.

Sound Quality and Bluetooth

For budget headphones this is one feature that is tricky to pull off successfully, but when it is, it elevates the headphone to legendary status. Unfortunately for MPOW the 059 doesn’t quite manage to give us that extra something in that area.

Sound quality is simply little more than mediocre (okay, it’s really not bad but I’m judging the sound quality based on the superior quality of everything else).

The blame for this lies mostly with the muddy bass, overly amped, the extra shot of power this comes with causes distortion in the overall sound quality of the headphones.

The highs and mids on the other hand are crisp and clean or at least they would be if not for the slight distortion from the lower end frequencies.

At the end of the day this distortion causes an otherwise good sound profile to fall to just above average, especially where sound purists are concerned.

Bass heads on the other hand might just fall in love with it for this very reason, which I should say for a budget headphone isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the world.

On a positive note, during a call, the 059 performs quite well as bass distortion isn’t really a factor in that instance.

Moving on to Bluetooth performance, pairing with the 059 is pretty simple, voice commands let you know when you’ve successfully paired with a device.

At this point, I think it’s worth mentioning the 059 is capable of multi-pairing. So should you want to switch between multiple devices that feature will make it a breeze for you.

Bluetooth range is the standard ten feet with a steady connection for pretty much that whole distance. Of course, that changes when walls are involved with range dropping to just over half of that.

Battery power lasts a good 20 hours on a 4-hour charge, which is quite good.

Most budget headphones compromize one thing or another, many even more, that’s how they manage to stay budget headphones. Unfortunately in the case of the MPOW, that compromize had to be on sound quality which is likely the most important feature for most people.

That said the sound profile is not bad, especially when compared to similarly priced headphones.

What sets the MPOW 059’s apart is the exceptional build quality, something which even expensive headphones struggle with. The fact it’s no slouch in the style and comfort departments is a big plus as well as you get both a pleasing aesthetic and great function.

If you’re an audiophile you will probably find this set of headphones to be a little too much for you in terms of sound quality (you’re probably looking in the wrong place anyway).

For the average person looking for a good set of budget headphones and willing to overlook a little bit of bass boost, this is one of those headphones that you will find satisfying, especially when you take into account all the other positives.

While sound quality might not be the H059 its forte, the overall quality cannot be denied, making this a great bang for buck package!

  1. Hello Jurgen,

Excellent review explaining the pros and cons of the headphones. In my case I am not very demanding with the quality of the sound. Therefore, it would be very feasible to make the purchase later. I also note that it has an excellent design and a comfortable padding on both ears. Thank you!

  2. Thank you for your review of the MPOW 059 Bluetooth Headphones.

I keep ordering my headphones online, and keep getting disappointed. Not having the opportunity to try them beforehand has cost me quite a bit of money (and my kids have now a variety of headphone to choose from, so they are happy!).

I listen to mostly classical music, so this affordable headphones could be a good choice. The slight worry is that you say they have a bit of extra bass in their sound, and I don’t think I need that for classical music.

Anyhow, thanks for the great and thorough review!

  3. Wow! These were some great headphones. Really cheap too. I have been careful about ordering headphones online because I like to test it for some reason before purchasing, similarly with clothes. Because of the price I suppose there is no noise canceling. How are these in bed? Since I want to sleep with the headset in bed

  4. Hi Jurgen. Thank you for your informative article on Blue Tooth Headphones. I have been looking for a set of head ohones for a while now. Both for music and TV. My wife likes to do crosswords and other puzzles during the evening and I know the noise from the TV in particular affects her. So I thought it was time I purchased a decent set. I really liked the price of the “MPOW 059”, and I don’t mind a bit of Bass. I’d rather that then to much treble. I’m no expert on headsets, will this one work ok with a flat screen TV.  Jim

    1. You would need a separate Bluetooth adapter if you want to connect it to the TV. You could also use the provided cable, but it’s not very long. Luckily you can easily use a 3rd party longer cable. Just make sure the cable is terminated on both sides with a 3.5mm plug.

If you’re actually looking for a headphone to primarily use with your TV there are better options though.

  5. I don’t know much about headphones but in person, I really do love music. That drives me to try some stuff of headphones. My first headphone is the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x.

I think the winning side of MPOW 059 is on its price. I must have to try this and see it for myself the sound quality of this stuff.

  6. Hey! Thanks for the great review!

It’s unfortunate that the MPOW came up short on the sound quality, because they look really nicely and seem to have great features. However, when buying headphones sound quality is the first quality you look for.

Maybe going cheap isn’t always the best way to go.

    Thanks again!

  7. I like your being upfront about the use of affiliates in the opening paragraph. It actually makes me trust you more.

I have hard time finding the right headphones. I don’t like earbuds because they fall out, never the right size, and can hurt.

The over-ear kind tend to be too heavy and fall off, or to loose and don’t stay on my ears.

Do they offer volume adjustments on the headphones themselves? It sometimes helps just changing the volume there then constantly adjusting on device. Your never guaranteed the same volume level when a new song or video comes on.
